A coat of arm is a symbolic emblem representing a country, nation, city, noble family, or individual.

The word "grb" (crest) was derived by the Slavs from the German word "Erbe" (inheritance).

The science that studies crests is called heraldry.

The first crests were brought by warriors who returned from the First Crusade in 1099.

Crests were carried on shields, which still remain the main basis of any crest today, with the aim of distinguishing warriors from one another.

A flag (banner, standard) is a piece of fabric, usually rectangular and multicolored, of varying size, which is hung on a flagpole or another suitable holder. Flags serve the purpose of identification or signaling.

    A square-shaped flag is called a banner.

The history of flags begins with the time of the Romans, who used flags (vexillum) to identify legions.

Later developments were mostly associated with coats of arms, so medieval flags were mostly representations of the crests of a specific ruler or feudal lord.

Today, flags are widely used, whether official (national, regional, municipal, military),

unofficial (sports clubs, fans, political parties), or as a means of signaling at sea (nautical flags).

Every country now has its own national flag.

The science that studies flags is called vexillology.

In battles, flags served as a means of recognizing allies or enemies. In the 16th century and later, certain regiments and companies began to use their own special flags. These were called standards, which were elaborately decorated and had embroidered insignia. Over time, such flags gained a greater role in military ceremonies, while flags made of durable materials were used on the battlefield.
